Opinion. More Infrastructure Is Needed In Our Schools.

Education is one of the pillars of our nation. Through education we get to acquire skills and specialize in different fields. This in turn helps us grow and build our nation effectively by having a diverse skill set. With this in mind we need to ensure education is easily accessible to all.

Education infrastructure is one of the most fundamental requirements for ensuring educational accessibility. Good infrastructure in schools have the following characteristics:

1.Amount of space per child that is adequate, as determined by the ministry of education of the country.
2.Enough area in each classroom for 30 to 40 students.
3.Enough sanitary facilities separate for both boys and girls.
4.Learning facilities, equipment and resources.

After COVID 19 pandemic with all the measures set, many schools lacked proper infrastructure. With the closing of schools many students halted their learning as many schools did not have the resources and infrastructure to conduct online learning. After resuming there were shortages in classrooms and no space for social distancing.

From the pandemic it is evident we need more infrastructure in school. There is a need to have more classes, well ventilated buildings so as to avoid a recurrence of the pandemic.  Ensuring the availability of computers in school with digitalized learning resources such as audio lessons will enable learning to continue even from home.

Investing in proper and well improved models of infrastructure will help mitigate another occurrence of closure of schools due to a pandemic. This will enable learning to continue effectively.

Sanitary facilities such as toilets also need to be added in schools. These include sinks for hand washing, modern toilet and disposal facilities. Adding them will help to ensure proper hygiene in schools reducing the occurrence of diseases in schools.

In my opinion, the government needs to invest in the infrastructure of schools. In doing so, learning will take place effectively ensuring our learners get quality education. Good infrastructure will motivate a learner to gain skills and knowledge effective for their growth.

The Space Of ICT In Achieving Quality Education

Over the years the government has taken strides in ensuring quality education is given to every Kenyan child. One of the manifestos of the Jubilee government was introduction of laptops to primary schools. Though a very good project, it faced so many challenges that slowed its implementation. Education and Covid-19.

                   Covid-19 virus  The COVID-19 pandemic impact is still being witnessed despite the goverment through its ministry of health abolishing the mandatory wearing of masks and restrictions to use the public properties.  The greatest effect was left on the education sector and the impact is now being felt on the ongoing Primary to secondary school transition of over 1.2M pupils who sat for their final primary school examination.
