The Space Of ICT In Achieving Quality Education

Since independence, education has been one of the major pillars of our nation’s development. Over the years the government has taken strides in ensuring quality education is given to every Kenyan child.
One of the manifestos of the Jubilee government was introduction of laptops to primary schools. Though a very good project, it faced so many challenges that slowed its implementation. These challenges included lack of power in schools, lack of ICT trained persons among others.
The project if implemented will bring a great change in our education as a country. With the world going global, there is a need to embrace Information Communication Technology (ICT) in our schools. ICT goes a long way in helping us achieve quality education.
By using ICT in schools, our learners gain skills in research, analyzing data and coming up with solutions. For example when a student researches a topic in the internet he/she is exposed to a lot of information. This gives them the skills of analyzing data to get the information and solutions needed.
Using ICT in learning motivates students and teachers. Teachers and students work together in getting information making learning fun and inclusive.
ICT also ensures quality education by offering equal opportunities to learners. In the recent years we have seen teachers known to be great in their teaching subjects uploading lessons and tips of learning in the internet. Any student in any part of the country can access this unlike the old days where equal opportunities weren’t available.
In the new competency based curriculum, ICT has enabled schools to shift to learner-centered environment. By digitalizing student’s progress and records, a teacher is able to monitor and help students individually hence achieving major goals of the CBC education.
In my perspective, ICT plays a key role in achieving quality education for our country.
